Maori Jewelry

jade, Bone, wood & pearl

Maori carvings (Whakairo) are unique to the Maori culture. The significance behind each carving is distinct and symbolic.  All of our pieces are carefully selected to bring special meaning to the wearer.

Greenstone (jade)

Jade or Greenstone are common names for the jade used to carve Maori designs. Our collection is made of Nephrite Jade which comes from New Zealand and is also imported from Australia and Canada. New Zealand jade is often hard to get and it is common to use a mixture of local and imported stone for stock carvings. In this case we simply label those pieces as “jade” or “greenstone”.

Authentic “Greenstone” from New Zealand is green nephrite jade found in the South Island of New Zealand. The Maori consider this stone sacred and call it “Pounamu”. We use this term in our collection when we are assured that it is truly New Zealand jade.

The Toki (adze) symbolizes strength and triumph over adversity.
